Is it for me?

If you have no flying experience at all, we suggest that you start with one of our flying lesson gift vouchers - this gives an excellent insight into what is involved in the course.

Learning to fly is probably easier than you think. At Truman Aviation, our nearly 30 years of flying training experience means that we know the best ways to help you learn. Our team of dedicated, professional and passionate instructors are there to guide you every step of the way.

We also maintain a large fleet of our own aircraft; from big to small, single-engine to multi-engine, we can make your flying as varied and exciting as you want it to be.

A brief overview of the course is given here; we will be more than happy to provide a more detailed syllabus if you wish. As you progress, it all becomes second nature - and you're free to explore the world.

The Course

Information on this website pertains to the JAR/EASA PPL course. For details about the NPPL course that we offer, please feel free to contact us.

45 hours flight training as a minimum - students must remember that this is a minimum time, not a target time. Your flight training will be individual to you. 25 of these training hours must be with an instructor; 10 hours must be solo time, five of which must be cross country solo time. The further five, or more, can be made up from any area of the course.

Your flight training will follow an approved Civil Aviation Authority syllabus. There are 19 individual areas to complete, a breakdown of which is available on request. These will begin with your learning how to handle the aircraft in the air, dealing with unusual attitudes and situations, finishing with you mastering the art of navigation and flying across the country. Remember that your instructor, along with the staff, are there to guide you all the way - you'll never be left unsure of anything. When your instructor feels that you have refined your skills, you will be allowed to take to the skies for a circuit on your own - a flight you'll never forget, ask any pilot. This is completing your first solo - which is exercise 14. You will also complete your qualifying cross country - a solo navigational flight of over 150 nautical miles.

The CAA Ground exams. There are seven multiple choice exams, set by the CAA, to be undertaken before you go for your final flight test. These are conducted in-house at Truman Aviation at a time that is convenient to yourself. Your own flying instructor will guide you through the exams and the right time to take them. These can, if you wish to study in advance, be taken before you commence flight training too. These range from Aviation Law to Meteorology and Navigation - we have a wide range of study aids and materials you can purchase to help you understand the subjects.

On completion of your your flight training and ground exams, you will be ready to take your PPL General Flight Test. This will test all of the content that you have learnt, including your planning, general handling and navigation skills. This is conducted in-house by a Truman Aviation Flight Examiner - your instructor will only send you for test if they think you are ready, so do not worry. After successfully passing your test, you can be granted your Private Pilot Licence - you will then be fully a fully qualified pilot. You can take your friends up, fly away for lunch or business or simply share the breath-taking views.
